In this study, 45 participants were separated into 3 groups:
1. The 1st group was the control group and did not do any type of training or increase their steps.
2. The 2nd group performed between 3-4 cardio sessions per week lasting 40-50 minutes on an incline treadmill.
3. The 3rd group trained cardio in the same way and also increased ~3,000 steps a day (in addition to their usual level). The increase was gradual.
Weight, waist circumference, body composition, and cardiorespiratory fitness (the "cardio level" or aerobic fitness) were assessed.
At the end of the study, the group that trained cardio had better results than the group that did not train, but the results were even better in the group that did cardio and increased their steps.
✅In fact, those who increased their daily steps lost approximately twice as much weight and gained 3 times more aerobic fitness than those who only trained cardio.
These results are aligned with those of other research that highlights the importance of being more active during the day.
🚶Programmed training is an incredible and necessary tool if you are looking to lose weight, improve your aerobic capacity or your general health, but if you want to have even better results (or feel that you are "stuck" in your rate of progress) we recommend moving more during the day through strategies such as walking more.
