The factors that most affect satiety are:
1️⃣ Fiber Content 🥦 Fiber increases the volume of meals and slows down digestion. Hunger and satiety are largely regulated by gastric emptying: if your stomach empties quickly, you get hungry sooner. Therefore, the slower it empties, the longer you’ll feel full.
The more fiber a meal contains, the greater the satiety it will provide.
2️⃣ Protein Content 🍗 Protein is the macronutrient that induces the greatest sense of fullness. It increases levels of leptin and peptide YY (which promote satiety), reduces levels of ghrelin (which stimulates hunger), and generates a greater thermic effect during digestion (greater thermic effect → more satiety).
The more protein a meal contains, the greater the satiety it will provide.
3️⃣ Texture 🌰 When a food is consumed in solid form, it requires chewing, while a liquid or creamy texture simply passes through.
Chewing for a longer period generates a greater sense of fullness, as it stimulates the release of more satiety-related hormones and slows down eating, allowing satiety signals to reach the brain.
Moreover, liquid foods are digested faster (they don’t require much breakdown), meaning gastric emptying is quicker (remember, the faster it empties, the sooner you’ll feel hungry again).
The firmer the food and the more you chew, the greater the satiety it will provide.
